It might help to know that Maerklin reverses not by interrupting the track voltage like Lionel, American Flyer, and Marx, but by putting a 24-volt pulse on the track.

RE: Reversing with your Marklin. Turn the transformer control (rheostat)
down to "0". Put the loco on the track. Move the rheostat past "0" (there's
a detent ) and it will cycle the E-Unit. Marklin E-Units cycle just like the
old Lionels. F-N-R. The reversing detent is in the opoosite direction of
the "0-14" volt speed range. That is, you must move the lever/dial back
past the "0". Some Marklin locos have a lockout lever to lock the loco in
whatever direction you wnat it to constantly run in. However, the only way
you can really change direction is to throttle down to "0" and then reverse
using the sequence described above.

Your loco probably had the E-Unit disturbed by hadling/turning it over
which caused the E-Unit to manually cycle into reverse (again, like the
old Lionels).

I am somewhat familiar with these locos as I have a very old Marklin
set myself, plus the museum I am affiliated with runs an extensive
Marklin-powered layout which I have to electrically maintain.

The transformer is proportional now but the engine still only goes backwards. There isn't any switch on the engine...bill...

The B probably stands for Besteuerung (control), 0 is zero and L is Leucht (light).

It is simple:
O is ZERO for ground should be wired to the side rails
B is for the middle rail to run trains with
L is for Light, if you want to connect a light, connect one wire to L and the other to 0.

If the train is reverse, than either your E-unit is stuck (look for a lever somewhere, I am not so familiar with Märklin) or it should be fixed / repaired. First look for a lever to put the E-unit in the alternating (forward-backward) mode instead off the constant mode.

I have a marklin train set. It is an older one . The transformer is a # 280 w/ 3 plugs on the back. The plugs are labled O,B and L. I can get the train to run but only in reverse. It looks like a ground stud on the left side. My question is ,what is the proper way to wire the track and what is each plug on the back do?thanks ...bill...
