RS5 does not equate to 4 chuffs per revolution. You have to read the loco features to see if a loco is equipped for 4 chuffs/rev. My NYC 080 switcher (RS4) was the first loco to have the cam for 4 chuffs.

Lionel uses a cam and microswitch to trigger the chuff rate for scale steam locos. There is no simple way to alter the rate unless you do as Chuckn suggests with the EOB board from TAS.

EOB uses the flywheel speed tape (as does MTH) to allow chuff rate to be adjusted.

4kitties, this is the main reason I have not bought any Lionel Locomotives for the past 5 years or so. I agree that they have a superior sound system but what's so hard about standardizing the 4 chuffs on their engines. They probably will eventually but in the mean time I'll keep on buying MTH. Ray

Well, since the Lionel website doesn't specifically mention variable chuff rate in this model, I guess it doesn't have it. [:(] EOB drop-in, here I come!

In all fairness though, it's a really nice looking model that runs well, and the sounds are fantastic. They blow away the sounds in my MTH J with PS1, as I expected. The ability to finesse the whistle almost makes up for not having 4 chuffs per revolution. And it's not like I'm totally stuck - at least there's a way to get what I want. Thanks all.

4 KITTIES try and hit your reprograming sequence in TMCC.
This might bring all back to functioning ight.

This is one of my biggest complaints with Lionel.
While MTH offers pretty much the same, full feature set across their motive power lineup, Lionel continues to spit out a mixed bag of features. Some have 4 chuffs, some have tethers, some have puffer style smoke units, etc.
Quite frustrating.

"because it was my understanding that Railsounds 5.0 locos offered 4 chuffs per revolution."

a) Some of the Railsounds 5.0 loco's support 4 chuffs per revolution, but not all. If it supports 4 chuffs, it says so in the catalog.

b) DCS remote will not alter this.

c) EOB will allow you to adjust the chuff rate. You can have TAS have the Odyssey board swapped out for an EOB.

Railsounds 5.0 and 4 chuffs per revolution

Hi all, I just bought the Lionel N&W Class J 6-38095 because it was my understanding that Railsounds 5.0 locos offered 4 chuffs per revolution. However, it chuffs at 2 per and the owner's manual doesn't mention how to change it. How do I do this, or will I have to upgrade to TA Studios' EOB? If it IS possible to set the chuff rate, can it be done with the MTH DCS remote, or do I need a CAB-1?

Hoping not to hear the worst, thanks,

Joel
