How much to refurb an old ZW
Posted by jimhaleyscomet on Thursday, February 16, 2006 11:46 AM
I have an old ZW that buzzes loudly. It could also use a new cord, new lenses and probably new rollers inside. My question is ... how much should it cost for me to have this ZW rebuilt?

I am a little hesitant to do it myself, but might if the cost is too high.

Jim,

The 4 rollers w/pins are about $5, the two lenses are about $1 ea., a new cord with an "L" on the plug is about $5, and $2 for a new whistle rectifier disk. The rest is labor. (Those are just the normal maintenence items. If you need a new circuit breaker that may run another $10).

Good luck,

I agree with Old 2037 on approximate cost for a do it myself ZW upfit.

The only time I sent one out for rehab it cost $55 for new cord, rollers, binding posts where needed, and 40 amp stud rectifier diodes[anode -to-case+, $3.50] to replace the selenium or copper discs for horn/whistle operation. Also included installing a new "L" logo plate on top. I never replace the breakers because for my use they are not reliable anyway---I use fuse blocks or breaker boxes to protect the transformer.

But shipping cost of the heavyweight is a bear unless you can get it done locally.

p.s:
Recently there was a discussion topic, I believe on the OGR Forum, regarding correction of the "humming" sound on a ZW-----has to do with vibration between the cores. I don't know whether your buzzing" is the same thing or not?

Yes-but it only works on ZW 275 Watt NOT 250 Watt. It is caused by the adhesive between the 2 pieces of the core failing or never being there to begin with. Search OGR forum and you will find the posts and photos.

Hello Jim,

I can refrab your ZW for you.
I will replace the rollers, a brand new cord, and a thorughcleaning. I would have to order the jewels.
Yes, it will cost a little bit more to ship it. I only charge 12 bucks a hour. I know how to quit mildly buzzing trannys. The Zw does have a trait to buzz a tiny bit louder than most transformers, mainly
beacause it it has such a big coil.
