Installing new power cord for ZW
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 15, 2006 6:47 PM
I recently purchased a used ZW that will need the power cord replaced as the current one is original and frayed.

Any tips on this? I'm sure it will require resoldering a new cord set onto the appropriate terminals, other than that anyone have any suggestions?

Kindest regards,

Pete

Use a non-polarized rubber replacement cord marked "heater;"
Take care not to stress the junction plate which is cantilevered;
Be very cautious not to break the amazingly thin primary winding leads;
Use heat and a round toothpick to gently ream out the rivet holes;
Tin the ends of the new cord;
Don't forget to tie the safety knot (strain relief) in the correct place inside the transformer so that tugging on the new cord doesn't pull on the wiring at the junction plate.

I had mine redone with new cord, bus bar, and breaker and it was less than $40 including labor. I don't mind wiring and disassembling a loco, but messing inside a transformer freaks me out. I'm very fortunate there's a great train shop in nearby Hanover, PA; Toy Trains Unlimited. I didn't have to pay shipping.
