QUOTE: Originally posted by TheTrainMaster I know there are several members here that own these engines. Well the other day in my local hobby shop they had an MTH 8-wheeled big boy that will run on O-31 curves that has the price for $699. I am seriously thinking about putting one on layaway, as it will be an excellent addition for my running collection. Do you think these big boys that can run on O-31 curves are realistic like the ones that only run on O-72 curves? Though I do have enough O-72 curves to run one, I think this one for $699 will look just as good on the layout, and therefore wont have to break the bank with the $1K+ model. What do you guys think? Chris

Most of my friends on this forum have Lionel & MTH, & most if they have one or the other don't cut the other one down, or try get a flame war started. I also have all the brands. I don't think that I have all of the answers, I was stating my opinion. *Shakes his head in disbelief.* Reply Edit Anonymous Member sinceApril 2003 305,205 posts Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, May 14, 2006 10:57 PM Redneck, my youngest brother is a year older than you are, and I am 14 years ahead of you. And I had my first train set at 10 years of age, in 1987 and it was a Lionel set. Over time I gotten into MTH products and I find them just as good as Lionel, so brand does not matter to me, and I will buy either. Have a set of Lionel cars on order, as well as some more MTH locos and some Atlas cars. I can care less what brands are out there, as long as I (or anyone else) enjoys their purchase, then that's all that should ever matter. I'm sorry that you think that MTH is junk, but that's your opinion and I surely don't have to agree. I buy what I like and thankfully I do not have to worry about what anyone else thinks. The main thing in this hobby is to enjoy at what you have, and simply not bash another for their choice. So you're welcome to have your opinions, but the ones that tend to start flames you should just keep out of the forums. That's all I will comment on that. And I still LOVE my MTH UP Big Boy. [:)] Reply Edit dwiemer Member sinceMarch 2005 From: Southwest Georgia 5,028 posts Posted by dwiemer on Monday, May 15, 2006 7:28 AM I have seen a few postings by this one and a very few others that tend to flame and state opinion without backing it up with reasons. If you think MTH is "junk" and say so on a public forum, then state your reasons. Did they give you poor service? Did you purchase a set and not have something work, to which MTH would not fix? When you make such opinions public, state your reasons. Bob had a problem with an engine, he stated the problem, but also gave an immediate posting when MTH made a good faith contact. I am not a fan of MTH, just how I am and what I like, but they do have some nice looking stuff. I will not try to project my opinion on others who may like that which I don't. I hate that I have to state the obvious to this poster again. RR Redneck, if you want to have people listen to you and have your words carry any weight, be respectful and back up your opinion with facts and observations, not by being critical. One of the big problems with carrying on the way you do is that you loose credibility and you will find that we simply will ignore you. He found another boiler and reported that the mystery object glued to the side looked like a plain black rectangular plate. It was not present on my original boiler, which he still had on hand. He did not know what the plate was for and had never noticed it before. I wonder whether it did have something written on it that someone painted over. I will repeat my earlier plea for information: "There is an unpainted rectangular area on the left side of the boiler, flush with the lower edge and just behind the second cylinders, that appears to have had something glued to it. It is about 1/4-inch high and 7/8-inch wide. I imagine that it might have been a nameplate. If it was simply an MTH brand label, I will just clean off the glue and paint it black. But if it is anything more important, I would like to get the missing piece from MTH. Can anyone who has this model (or the 4015 that seems to have replaced it in the catalog) help me to identify this?" Bob Nelson Reply dbaker48 Member sinceDecember 2005 From: Sunny So. Don Reply lionelsoni Member sinceDecember 2001 From: Austin, TX 10,096 posts Posted by lionelsoni on Tuesday, May 16, 2006 7:18 AM Don, your first two pictures, of the left side, seem to show the same thing that the MTH repairman described--a blank black plate. I'm guessing that MTH thought they might put an "MTH" or "Rail King" plate there, then changed their minds and substituted a black one. I think I'll just clean the glue off and paint it black. Thanks very much for the pictures. Bob Nelson Reply Join our Community! Our community is FREE to join. To participate you must either login or register for an account.
