Rivet,
My MTH R-1 subway car owner's manual advised to very sparing oil the axels out of the box, but to hold off greasing the gears for a while. Seems they don't put much oil on the axels, but they do grease up the gears ok at the factory. Don't have any idea what the folks do over at Lionel. Hope this helps some.

In *** Teals new book on train repairs , I believe he says that the only engines that he ever sees that really need oil and grease are those that run 8 hours a day in displays.

My outdoor layout sometimes does need oiled after I run in the rain or snow.

I don't see the info in the box so I'll ask you fine folks. Do the new Lionel engines need to be lubed and oiled right out of the box?
