Modern 6464 Boxar Questions

Hey Ya'll

I'd like to get some Modern 6464 Boxars. I know that reproductions came in sets of three.

How many of the postwar reproduction 6464 boxcar sets were cataloged?

I aslo saw that Lionel made modern 6464 Boxcars in the Santa Fe name. How many Santa Fe 6464 boxcars are there.

Are postwar 6464's hard to find. I'd like to get an Original "State of Maine", and a few others.

Please Help.

Hello Steel Rails! Lionel has reproduced all of the 6464 Boxcars from the 50s-60s.Plus,Some new ones in Different roadnames Such as the Erie Railroad & The archive series as well.Try the Trading Post Train Shop in Cleveland.Jim has quite a few of the old 6464s as well as the new versions. His phone# is 1-216-661-7300.& I do believe that Jim has some in their original Boxes as well. Lionel made about 9 sets of the reproduction 6464 Boxcars & cataloged about two or three different versions seperately. Jim may have a original State of Maine for sale also as I've seen them there. Do they have a website I can go to? I didn't know they made newer ones in Erie names. It's not my favorite railroad, but I think a few of them would be great to have to match my Erie Hudson.

That's good. I know that some of the original 6464's are up there in price quite a bit, so I have selected a few of the oroginal ones that I'd like to buy. The State of Maine, The Red MSTL, and the Santa Fe 6464-700.

I'd like to aquire all the reproduction sets. Maybe some single ones for good measure.

there are 10 sets of the reproduction 6464 box cars. i love them i think they are one of the best things lionel has come out with in along time. i am very happy that i was able to get a beautiful 6464 b&o sentinal withouth having to shell out $600. i love the originals and would love to someday styart collecting them, but in my opinion the reproductions are a better value and better looking.
i recently visited the train station in mountain lakes NJ, they had a ton of original 6464s alot of them looked to be pretty close to mint, check them out www.train-station.com 973-263-1979

I am really interested in the Reproduction Sets that have The State of Maina and the Sentinial's in them.

I really think that 6464's are cool, and I hope to buy some soon when my birthday comes around. This year, I asked for only money, and lots of it, so I could buy the things (TRAINS) that I want.

This is off-topic, but watch out on the State of Maine boxcars - I find them to be addictive! I started with an original 6464-275, then picked up a 3494-275, then the 2 Lionel re-issues (3-color door and all-red door), then the Lionel Standard O issues, then the K-Line, then the Atlas O Trainman, then the MTH Railking operating version...I now need a dedicated shelf just to display these! I never thought I would be interested in this type of collecting, but it's been a lot of fun to pick this one type of car and then collect all the variations I can find. And I know I'm not done yet! I particularly enjoy comparing paint colors, fonts, etc. from one manufacturer to the next. I'm wondering if there were as many variations in the prototype as I'm seeing in the models.

When I was a kid, seeing a freight train with a dozen State Of Maine cars was nothing out of the ordinary. I don't remember the last time I saw one in actual use.

4kitties, I don't know how to tell you this, but there is one glaring omission in your listed collection. You're missing one. A nice one!

I guess you've waited long enough. Williams makes one. I was going to buy one as my Platinum Club car, but they were sold out. Got a B&M caboose instead.

I hope this doesn't start a stampede. I really want one to be available in September when I re-up!

The one thing to be aware of going in, the first set still seems to command a premium (I remember about $300, but it may have moved slightly down in the last few years). #2 may be in the mid $100's range, but I think most of the others come up in the ~$75 - $125 neighborhood.

Something no one else has mentioned, but I think the "Overstamp" cars Lionel made were 6464 style. If I recall there's 2 or 3 2 packs of those that were made. (I think there were also 2 overstamp cars that were only available in a Conrail Service Station set in the late 90's)

Of course! Williams' decoration is as nice as any. I hadn't thought of them because not too many people sell Williams rolling stock on eBay. I will no doubt pick up one of their BAR cars at the next opportunity though. Thanks.

Not to fond of the overstamp sets, so I will stick to the postwar Reproductions, Santa Fes, Eries, maybe some Archive Sets, and some others.

Hello steel rails, I don't remember seeing post-war sets of 6464 Boxcars, I think the post-war were sold seperately, like one car at a time. If I was going to collect 6464 boxcars I would go after the post-war cars, the new ones are too light weight for me as they derail easier for me.

Yeah,

The Postwar ones were only seperate sale and in train sets, modern reproductions of the Postwar 6464's were sold in sets of 3.
