You can not treat trains as an investment. I have spent over 20K in the past 2 years and I run everything. When asked about spending the amount a car would cost on my trains I look at it that the car will be trash within 10 years and 150K miles and the trains might be worth 40% of what I paid after 10 years. The pleasure of recreational activies is priceless and I will never sell my trains so it does not matter how much they depreciate. Whether the trains are from Kline is immaterial. A comparison between the Kline lt. pacific I have and the MTH Mikado shows that the level of detail is compariable with a slight edge to the MTH engine; however, the motor in the Kline is a little sloppy in its housing. This causes the slowest speed of the Kline is 4 smph and the mikado is 2 smph. Because the Kline electronics failed I installed a Proto2 upgrade it in the Lt. Pacific. Ron of Engine House Hobbies had some issues associated with the lack of space and the sloppiness of the motor mount; however, the engine runs great above 4 smph. The reason for this lenghty comment is to illustrate that you can purchase an engine from any manufactor and replace its electronics if it should fail and the company is out of business such as Kline might be.

You can probably find some good deals, but keep in mind that K-Line may not be around to provide service for their higher end locomotives.

If I came across one I liked at a good price I'd buy it.

Probably a good time to buy one if you have found one you really like, but I don't think "invest" should come into the picture for any new trains. Like any "investment", you try to find something that few people want today, but many will want in a few years. Toy train wise?...maybe excellent quality litho wind-ups...who knows? Joe
