I believe he does do layaway, but the one time I wanted something and didn't currently have the cash available he put it aside with my name on it till I had the cash. A lot depends on the relationship you have with the owner.

Does Your Local Hobby Shop Offer Layaway?

Fortunately, the 3 hobby shops in my area does. I think its nice to be able to put something in layaway and then pay it off little by little, depending on the shop's terms. Most of them I have have been to require at least 20 percent down, so in a way its not that bad at all. My biggest advantage is that it will be easier to buy some locomotives without having to come up with a large chunk of cash up front. Usually what sucks is that by the time I have the money to buy something, all of a sudden its no longer available, which really frustrates me.
