Hi
For you f3 growls y found the way to decrease the sound.
1 take out the idler grear and reinstall with light grease.
2 eliminate evey free play in the worm shaf t bushing. You can use brass sheet to make the shims.

I have the 2333 Southern AA units which I traded for in the early '60s. I recently got it out, lubed it and ran it a few turns on the mainline. Still growls and sounds much like a John Deere threshing machine. No "D" battery installed so I can't blow the horn.
Classic Toy Trains recently did an F-3 article on the value of the NYC, Southern and the most vauable--the Western Pacific.

Well, from the 2004 greenberg book it gives two prices guides depending on which one you own.

NYC F-3 AA Units 48-49

1. Rubber stamped lettering Good-410 Excellent-780

2. Heat stamped lettering Good-285 Excellent-610

These prices are basically a guide to go by and give you an idea for how much its worth. If you also have the original boxes that too adds to the wealth. NYC is my favorite road and those NYC units are my favorite to run on my layout so defintly hold onto those[:D]. Hope this helps

Both Greenberg's and Doyle's reference books indicate the 2354 NYC F3 was offered from 1953-55.

It came in two sets, 2209W (1953) and 2229W (1954). Only the 2209W set came with the B unit, but to determine which set you have, we need to know the numbers shown on the sides of your cars (a "set" is locomotives plus cars).

Please note that to qualify as a "set", you must have all the original boxes and paperwork. Otherwise, the value would be sum of the values of the individual pieces.

I think 2333-20 is the part number for the frame casting for horizontal-motor F3s. The model number for the locomotive is the number on the number boards of the A units, with a P suffix for a powered A unit, T for a dummy A unit, and C for a dummy B unit. I cannot find a NYC F3 in the 1955 catalog.

Hello board
My dad's had this set since it came out in 1955. He has the Lionel Lines New York Central Diesel Locomotive (2333-20) with the A, B and C units. The set is in all around good condition, a bit dusty. It still works, even the horn. What's the worth of this set? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance
