Anyone know of a good paint stripping agent I can use to remove a couple layers of post produciton paint without damaging the integrity of the plastic shells?

Chameleon stripper is guaranteed not to harm plastics and you can find out about their products at:

I have used this product with excellent results, although not on postwar Lionel trains. The website recommends you use their gel product for these earlier, more sensitive plastics. You may want to contact them and inquire specifically about what you want to do. Their number is [phone]. Good luck!

Richard Sherry, an acknowledged expert in repainting postwar F-3 shells, used about 1/3 cup of powdered Tide detergent in about 5 gallons of warm water, then soaked the shells for 24 hours. He then used a plastic bristle bru***o remove any remaining paint, then rinsed with cold water.
