Marx Toy Trains
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 2:38 PM
I want to say thanks to Classic Toy Trains for the article in the February 06 issues about Marx Toy Trains.
When I was a child my parents didn't have much money, so a Lionel train set was out of the question. But I did get a Marx train set for Christmas back in 1948, which I still have and it still runs. Sometimes under the Christmas tree.
My kids, grandkids and now my great grandkids enjoy them very much.
Over the years I have managed to pick some more Marx at swap meets and on ebay.
So thanks again to Classic Toy Trains Magazine, and don't forget us Marx collectors.

It would be great to see more Marx featured in CTT.

I started to collect Marx as a result of my being a K-Line Collector, and I started to collect the Marx trains that K-Line used as the basis for their early production.

The quality of these Marx engines, (the 333, and 1829 steamers, the 1998 S-2, and the Marx Budd Car) surpassed what I expected, and I learned the truth to the statement that the only rare Marx Loco is the one that doesn't run. I also aquired a number of the Marx Deluxe Plastic Freight Cars, that again were the molds that K-Line used early on.

Marx runs better than anyone on 027 track, and for the operators out there that do not know Marx, the engines that I mentioned all have 2 position reverse units, headlights, and some of the steamers have smoke, and do they smoke, and some of the 1998 UP S-2 units have the Diesel Roar sound units.

Other great marx engines include the 666 steamer (noted in CTT) and the 1095 Plastic E Unit Diesels.

My Dad gave me a train set in the late fifties and like a lot of others he couldn't afford the Big L! So the less costly Marx was obtained and given and used and used. The set was given away but since has been replaced. I now have more that ever, should get the plywood down soon and will run a 999, 666, 1666, 333, and Monon diesel! I think all the trains made in that time frame: Lionel, American Flyer, and Marx are great runners.... were then, still are today, and probably will outlast quite a few of us! But not before we run 'em some more eh?

I will comment on one thing in that CTT article about Sleeprs and Duds that mentioned the Marx 666: could they have found a more homely looking 666 to photograph?? I mean yeeesh..... give me that unit, a toothbrush, Q-Tips, some denatured alcohol and paper towels. and an hour. We could make it look a lot more presentable...... but maybe that was the point too..... yes thanks for the Marx feature..............

Jim I think they wanted that 666 to look well played with, like most of them were.Their great play value and inexpensive price back them compared to lionel is what makes them Very valuable in Great shape today. For those of us that did get a marx train set for christmas or as a small kid, Did our parents get there moneys worth or what!!.I ran that set into the ground.[^]

Ditto on the congrats to CTT! I've been collecting Marx since I was a teenager (and admired my brothers Santa Fe E-7's since long before that). There is a definate need for more articles on Marx - as well as the other tinplate (like Hafner) and "low-end" manufacturers (like AMT/Kusan). I admire a 400E, 700E Hudson etc. as much as the next guy but it was (is) the "cheap" stuff that always brings more people into the hobby...
