MTH paint problems?
Posted by mickey4479 on Sunday, January 15, 2006 5:38 PM
I was at a train show in Nov and someone commented about problems with paint adhesion in early MTH rolling stock. I have some railking box cars and reefers and they are bout 5 years old, and I have not had a problem at all. Was this a bogus comment from a low balling looker/buyer?

I think so ! Well not knowing all the rest of the story, who knows except him. Maybe they did have 1 bad run with paint at some time, but I had a lot of their cars, & engines I bought in the 90s, & never noticed any paint problems. I haven't heard of any, either .
Thanks, John

Depends on the particualr car. There were some problems with early Amtrack Railking passenger cars. These had multiple paint overlays and there was some "cracking/crackling" off the top blue and red paint on the window stripes.

Yeah as a matter of fact, from my own experience and what I have heard echoed by others who have tried, the MTH stuff is the hardest to strip... the paint just doesn't come off. On the other hand, some of the newer Lionel cars strip remarkably easily.

That it is so difficult to strip the paint off MTH cars, to me, speaks of their quality as far as paint adhesion and quality of paint application. That's not to say, as mentioned above, that there wasn't a problem with something at one time, but I suspect this is a clear exception rather than a consistant problem.
