All the insulation on wires leading to the solenoid are cracking and causing a short. Can new wires be attached to the solenoid or do I need a new one?

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.

If you can get at the wires there is no reason they can't be replaced. Slide a piece of shrink tubing over the splices to prevent shorting. It may even be possible to loosen/cut one end of the existing wire and slide shrink tubing over it.
