Cheap sound effects ???

My speaker is in the shell and you are right it does sound great without the shell and not so good with the shell on. I am unable to remove the fuel tank and not so sure I want to cut a hole in it. I would suppose the sound would be alot better though.

If the volume bothers you, there are kits (@ radioshack?) for building a very small amplifier on a 9 volt battery. Here in Europe Conrad has them on offer for about 8 dollars.
Those things could get sound a bit louder. May be another speaker will do the job too..

Thanks for all the good info. I was also interested in doing the Beeps. How is this product different from some other companies? Is it price, sound quality or something else?

I don's see why not. As long as the boxcar had power pickups on the bottom, something you might have to add..

Would you recommend these for a Polar Express Set? I want to add some sound to that set maybe to a REA boxcar car behind the tender - would that work?

I have been using one in my MPC era U36B since it came out. I really like the engine sounds, horn and bell. The horn and bell can be operated together or seperately. You can also press the horn button however long or short you want.

I also have some of those True Blast II horn boards which only do a set horn sequence, you also cannot use the bell and horn together.

The only problem I have with mine is the volume (haven't found a good sound baffle for the speaker - I am using a paper towel tube cut to size).

All in all, I would recommend purchasing one...

Been looking at the Sound Commander for some of my older engines. http://www.electricrr.com/index.htm Looks like a good price for sound in conventional engines. Is anyone using this product , if so how do you like it. Give us all a review....Tim
