I was just at Chicagoland Hobby and they had rollers as you mentioned. Looks like you just screw them to a board and you have a test track.

If you turn the locomotive on its side or top you can test a few things that way and not have to buyu or make a test stand. Basicly what is needed are a couple of jumper wires with aligater clips on the end, can buy them at an electronics store. For whistling tenders I remove the shell and try them with the top off to see what happens, the old motors you can turn with an insulated screw driver while applying electric to them.
For can motors or sealed motors as it is called either they work or don't work and need replacing.

My American Flyer stuff is a little different but I use a section of track under the tender, and made several plywood blocks in various shapes to block the locos up on the front cowcatcher /truck and cab. Simple cheap and stable.

I have seen a test stand running and for sale at several recent train shows, with a G-gauge steam locomotive on it. I suspect that one can also be had for O or S. I would think it not hard to make one yourself with several small ball-bearing sets. They would have to be adjustable if you want to run more than one locomotive. And I would be sure to include some sort of tie-down.

Does anyone have any good ideas for making a good test or maintence track? Primary question regarding rollers of some nature for static operation of the engines? Are they available for sale?
