Need help with wiring
Posted by cccpro on Monday, January 9, 2006 8:27 AM
For Christmas Grandpa gave my six year old boy three pre-WWII Lionel train sets - yes they run. Plus a new Lionel set and extra track - FasTrack. I have modeled N-Scale for a few years. I am looking for a source or some info for "block" wiring (turning sections of track on and off) so my son can leave more than one train on the layout. He has been working my N-Scale for a few years. Not looking for anything fancy - just basic block type wiring that my pre-DCC N-Scale had. Thanks in advance for any help or info.

Do it just like your two rail "N",only insulate the center rail. There are insulated track pieces or you can just cut the rail making sure you go al the way through the rail .Wire and switch then as you are used to.

Welcome to the forum!
I had to re-learn this after years in N scale - and candidly, don't know what to do with the Fastrak. There's probably sometime you do with the center rail 'tab' or a special piece of track you need, but for the tubular track, get a set of insulating (plastic) pins, pop one in the central rail on the track pieces on both sides of your insulated sections and then run a separate 'lock-on' with power to that spot - and you can trace these to a series of on-off switches or just power it separately. Good luck, he's a lucky boy to have you and his grandpa! Also recommend visiting the library - I'm sure they have a book on toy train wiring. There's a nifty one sold by this website's publishers too - I learn better by looking at the pictures anyway.
