Raymond Loewy , the industrial designer that gave us the GG-1 also designed the H-16-44 switcher.



I didn't know that. You learn something every day.

He also designed the Lucky Strike cigarette package, Avanti automobile, and of course this classic -

Story was, his first commission was to design the trash cans in New York's Pennsylvania Station.

I have a feeling that the only thing he designed on the switcher that they actually used was the cab window. Once he became "famous", its unclear what items (radios, vacum cleaners, etc.) he personally designed, since he signed everything comming out of his "shop". Like J.L.Cowan. he was a master at self-promotion. Joe

Raymond Loewy also desingned the Familier green Coca-Cola Bottle,Pennsy Torpedo.And, he also charged Lionel $6,000.00 for a rendition of a Coal loader that he drew for their engineering dept which Lionel later made a model of to recoup what they paid him for.

Here is Raymond Loewy's latest locomotive design. The Union Pacific has painted a new locomotive in the livery of Air Force One, which was designed by Loewy. The locomotive has the name of the earlier George Bush, the 41st president, on it and is numbered 4141, to honor (flatter?) him.

Just a correction regarding Loewy and Coke : he designed the old style soda fountain counter dispenser (the one that looks like the MOMA building) and the old nickel bottle dispenser with the crank handle, NOT the bottle itself - that's an even older design from someone else's studio.

I saw UP4141 over the weekend.  It was parked in Austin at Sneed for about a day at the head of an unremarkable train.  It has acquired a few graffiti.
