Trestle Plans?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, January 7, 2006 11:00 AM
I'd like to add an elevated loop to my layout... As I'm in no hurry, I'd like to make the trestles by hand... Does anyone know of any good sources of scratch-built trestle plans/designs?

When I built my layout I used a plan from Model Railroading, maybe 5 yrs. ago, that was for HO. I scaled everything up and drew some templates for the supports. If I remember correctly the outer columns were at 15 degrees off vertical. I had ripped down some 1/4"X1/4" pine strips for main members and used various pieces of bass wood for bracing, etc.

I have an old book from Kalmbach, titled Model Railroad Bridges and Trestles. I'm sure you can still get it or a newer one is out. It shows you how to make all the bents & a jig to mass produce them, along with making many oyher bridges. It may be HO, but you can still use it for O -gauge.

Thanks for the book tip... My County library system has it - and thanks to the wonders of an on-line catalog; it will be at my local branch on Tuesday. Nice to see my tax dollars at work! [:)]
