Lionel 2226W How to repair or replace Whistle mechanism?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 5, 2006 9:38 PM
I recently picked up a Lionel 226E Engine and a Lionel 2226W tender. The engine needs a good cleaning and maintenance, but the 2226W Tender willnot make a sound. Any ideas on what to do to repair? if not does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement whistle mechanism?
Thanks

Suggestion. Check to be sure pickup rollers and wires are attached. Take shell off. Put on track by its self. See if points close. A little emory cloth to "brighten" up the contacts between the points will help. You can take the top of the armature off and this exposes the brushes [usually springs on burshes]. Clean armature, brighten surface, clean burshes and springs and clean out bursh sockets in top. A couple of drops of oil with needle oiler down shaft under armature to reach lower bearing. Reassemble. Put a drop of oil in the top where the armature shaft comes through. All of this is assuming the diode in the transformer is working.

Usually the brushes are fouled, like chief said, clean it. I can clean it for you if it is a hassle for you. I have saved over 4 tenders that were pronounced "dead" by their owners, 3 just needed a professional cleaning, 1 had cracked and broken superflex wire.

Just email me at jw_loves_trains@yahoo.com to schedule a repair.
