need help with switches
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 2, 2006 9:26 PM
hey everyone had a quick question. I hooked up my o22 switches (o gauge) and getting a buzzing sound. the moving rails in the center of the switch should go to one side or the other, but not?? I wired the two switches together so they work in sink but still doing same thing. any suggestions? this wiring i have now is from the train store and nylon pins are in the outside rails as in the book and from the store which was what they told me. frustrated! everyone told me that switches are easy to hook up but not looking that way.

my lay out is a 14ft x 14ft room, simple square with radius corners) with a 10 ft turn out on one wider wall using two right hand switches.

are the nylon pins in the wrong place or is the wiring wrong?????

Are you powering them from track voltage or using the constant voltage pin?

If you are powering them from track voltage, is there enough voltage to throw the switch?

Have you tested the switches individually (not on the layout) to make sure they work properly on their own?

Also, some switches have different controllers (that look the same) for right hand or left hand. Make sure you keep them straight.

I DO HAVE ENOUGH POWER AND YES I HAVE CHECKED THEM I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE TRAIN STORE AND THEY SAID TO PUT THE PINS IN THE TWO RAILS THAT HIT EACH OTHER FIRST. WHICH IS THE STRAIGHT TRACK WOULD BE THE RIGHT AND THE CURVED TRACK WOULD BE THE LEFT ONE. LETS SEE IF THEY WORK.

For an O-22 switch, the "insulating" pins go on the inside rail of the straight /through track but on the outside rail of the curved track. The Olsen Toy Train parts web site has a diagram of the O-22 switch if you need to see the internals.

my switches turned out working finally. and the way they worked is calling several people from different stores, one guy said the new 022 box the picture on the front, the one without the white background is the correct way!! now i was confused through the manual and people telling me different ways this is the only way it worked so the way that is if you are looking down on a right hand switch, the right rail on the curved track is insulated and the right rail on the straight track is insulated. which is the inside track if you have a route 2 going thru the center of your main circle track and the outside track if you have a turn out going outside of your main track. thx for all your help and good switching.
