[red]Train watching areas![/red]
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 11:52 PM
Hello,
Can someone please tell me where I can find how to locate the best locations to view and photograph real trains? Aren't there some groups that participate in that kind of activity? Thanks for the help!

This is actually a better question for the Trains Magazine forum, but since you asked, what part of the country are you asking about?

Kalmbach actually has a guide to North American Hot Spots, that lists a bunch of places.

Big Boy,
Thanks! Appalachia, especially western West Virginia, or anywhere in the state, southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky is where I'm most interested in. How about Florida? And what is Kalmbach? Anyone else?

Kalmbach is the publishing company that hosts this website. If you click on the logos on the front page, they should guide you into the sales area, and you'll see the hot spot book I mentioned.

I got your email last night, but I was falling asleep. I'll go look at my copy and email you a few locations.

Big Boy,
Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it! I've wanted to get back into this for years, since I was a little kid actually but just never had the time (not that I have the time now, I'm just MAKING the time!) I look forward to seeing what you find out! Thanks again!

If I lived in West Virginia I would go to Hunnington. When in Florida go to the Folkston Funnel which is actually just over the line in Georgia.

George,
Thanks! I know about Huntington - great town! But I didn't know that about Florida! I'll definitely check that out! Do you know specifically where to go? Thanks!

The town of Folkston has a dedicated shelter just for railfans, sort of like the one in Rochelle, Illinois. It has a built in scanner powered by a timer so you can listen to the conversasion on the radio. All CSX trains going into Florida, except those headed due west, pass that point.
