A Storage Solution for your trains
Posted by Buckeye Riveter on Wednesday, December 28, 2005 2:17 PM
Storage of the cars in my train room has always been a hassle. The closet is too small and there really isn’t a good place to build shelves until the layout is complete. Yesterday at Home Depot, they were selling these 20 quart clear plastic storage bins for $5.00 each. I grabbed three and then later picked up three more. I tried to store a whole set of similar cars in each box. Being clear, I can tell what is in the box.

It might not be as good as Spanky’s shelves, but it works for my situation.[:D]

Chief, If you purchased enough of these, you would have completed benchwork. [(-D]

I might be headed to the Depot. Thanks for sharing that find. I like the fact that they are transparent.

Sure, sure steal my idea - actually my wife's!

She got a bunch of those clear storage containers at Target 3 Christmases ago and my trains have been stored in them since. I separate type of stuff by container - track in one, rolling stock in another, etc, and then use the transparency of the plastic to further determine contents.

Well done!

I use a lot of those plastic storage boxes to keep my empty boxes in. While my trains are on shelves these bins keep the boxes in good shape. They stack well too.

A few of the unmentioned benifits are that these containers are great protection against moisture and dust. Add a silica pack to a container for extra protection during long periods of storage. They're also great for organizing and storing supplies in catagories...one container for scenery stuff, one for electicals, etc.

Those bins do help, I noticed a while back that I needed some when I started tripping over train stuff on the floor.

That's what I've been using to store my engines and rolling stock. In each container I place a small plastic bowl full of sillica gell to help keep moisture to a minimum. The sillica is actually kitty litter, $4 for a huge gallon sized container. It can be "recharged" in the oven, so every 4-6 weeks, I do that.
