My new train shelves!
Posted by jonadel on Monday, December 26, 2005 3:29 PM
This is just about the best gift a Dad could ever get from a son, new custom made train shelves for the train room. I don't need many but I would like to show off some of my trains when they are not on the track. My oldest son began a woodworking hobby about 3 years ago and he is just having a great time, turning out some really good stuff---- I know, I'm predjudiced! And proud. He wants to put on another coat of stain and poly before I can bring them home so I took these pics yesterday with one of the shelves just sitting on a trunk at his home. He made 4 shelves for me.

Each shelf is 48" long and this is his only train, a Christmas Train around the tree

A little closer to show some of the details

This shows how it comes apart, the back piece will be screwed into the wall and the front piece simple slides onto it.

See, a round peg can fit into a square opening

One final overall shot

I think what all this proves is that the best gifts don't have to be expensive and even though he didn't have the best "pine wood derby car" 20 years ago he eventually figured out how to be terrific using wood!!

A proud Dad.

Great shelves Jon.
From an old woodworker, it really takes a lot of time to make something like that, so enjoy...Tim

Thanks Tim, that means a lot especially when it comes from a woodworker who understands the time needed to complete what looks like an easy project. Time is the biggest problem for him as his job dictates how much time he doesn't have to really enjoy the hobby. I hope to help him insulate his detached shop/garage (very big garage) so he can use it all year. I'll pass your words onto him.
