3-Rail On Front Page of DC Post's Style Section

WOW! Three rail trains are the feature story on the front page of the Style section of today's Washington Post. There's a very large photo of a steam engine on 3-rail track, a photo of Mike Wolf, and five additional photos (mostly 3-rail) on page two as the article continues. Article is mostly positve, quoting extensively from WOlf and Jerry Calabrese. Overall, great publicity for trains at the "height" of the 3-rail season! I wonder if the author is one of us?

Here's a link to the article (no photos):

Or , it can be accessed via a Google News search.

Thanks Lou for the information and the link.

I found this statement rather remarkable:

In 2000, the company (Lionel) sold fewer than 30,000 such sets. This Christmas season, it will sell about 140,000.

A fourfold increase in sets! [:0]

As we all know, most of us started in this hobby with a set. I would think that the future is not gloom and doom as some predict with those type of sales.[:D]

I wonder how many "sets" were sold in the 1940-1960s on average per year?

I wonder how many of those starter sets are the Polar Express? Seems to be the "hot" set two years running.
