Scented Smoke
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 6:39 PM
Anyone have a recomendation for scented smoke from MTH? I don't mind the generic smoke, but it's a little much for my better half. I mentioned to her that there's scented smoke, and she thought the Christmas, or wood, or apple pie wood be great! Gotta keep the wife happy with my train hobby! [:D] Greg

Oh, your gonna love the scented smoke ! I don't even know if MTH makes scented or not, but a lot of us use J T 's Mega Steam. ( www.megasteam.com )
I use their Frying Bacon in my K-line diner, & now " Christmas Pine" in my steam engine ! There are a bunch of types ! Have fun !! Thanks, John

MTH also makes scented smoke. I, like John also use JT MegaSteam. I have also used MTH Christmas Scent. It's not bad, but I like the JT better.

I am a person with a very active inner child. This is why my wife loves me so. Willoughby, Ohio - the home of the CP & E RR. OTTS Founder www.spankybird.shutterfly.com

JTS Megasmoke like JOHN said is good.
Wife doesn't mind Vanilla or Apple Harvest.
Barts Pnumatics listed in CTT is good also in Cedar.
Got to keep the women happy?

Greg,

i tried the MTH regular and wood scented fluid, I really liked the wood scented, but my wife did not at all.

After witnessing friends using JT's with good results, at October's York show I bought a bottle of JT's Megasteam original Cedar scent. I have been very satisfied with it. I love the cedar smell, and it seems like I get 30% more smoke out of my locos. Even my wife likes it, she said it smells better than any of the others I have tried. Jt's seems to burn off quicker than the MTH fluid though, I guess the increased smoke production means you will use more fluid. I just ran out of the stuff tonight.

I will definitely stock up on JT's at April's York show.

As far as MTH Christmas goes, some people like it, some don't. Personally I do, but I'm the only one in the house who does. It's a very pleasant piney scent. Just try to avoid spilling it, as the unused fluid has a very potent smell that will probably be there for a couple of weeks. I don't have any experience with any of the other brands of smoke fluid.

I have yet to encounter a JT's scent that I didn't like. They seem to go over pretty well with most other people, too.

I personally would not use Supersmoke(Bart's Pneumatics), as in my experience it will gum up your wicks quicker than anything. I had to replace a bunch of them because of it.

Smoke fluids are cheap enough that you can buy a bunch and experiment to see which one you like best. Mega-Steam is only $3.50 for a 2 oz. bottle. The only problem with the MTH fluid is that if you don't like it, you're stuck with a $10 bottle of smoke fluid that you can't use.

I have no sense of smell, but I bought a bottle of JT's Megasteam so others would enjoy it. Honestly, after using it for over a month, it didn't smoke as dense and white in my locos as Lionel fluid does. It looks more like a fine vapor when I can see it at all, and no increase in volume was ever detected. I tried it again last weekend and had the same results. I've tried mixing it with Lionel, but from now on, no more.

I use J T 's Mega Steam. ( www.megasteam.com ). He just added a new scent Maple Sugar that I ordered on Monday and recieved on Wednesday. I use bakeing bread, maple sugar, ceder, bacon, christmas pine, cinnamon roll and coffee. You can order the 8 oz bottle and save money. I use it in Kline, Lionel and MTH engines without any problems. Volume appears more than Lionel's and MTH's smoke on the same engines and seems (to me) to disapate more quickly.

I use JTs for my Lionel and my Garden Railway stuff. It has increased smoke production in both of my engines, and I am very happy with it. I also have Diesel and Christmas from MTH, and I love them as well. The JT that I have is Vanilla, and I am gonna get wood fired steamer, and maybe some of the ones mentioned above.

Jim,

When I bought the JT's, the owner told me to not make any judgements until the locos had gone through three doses of the stuff.

As I stated before, I used it for over a month with disappointing results. I used roughly 1/2 a bottle of the stuff. More than enough to have seen a difference if I was ever going to. I emailed the owner and told him nicely what was happening with the faint output and how disappointed I was. He blamed the poor output on my locomotive's smoke unit, which smokes fine with Lionel fluid. He refunded my money, then told me never to order from him again! I was floored. Did he think I was trying to scam him out of a whopping $3.50 for a new bottle?! Or did he think I lied about my results so he would refund my money? Please! All I wanted was the same results everyone else was claiming to get. I never, ever saw the "Thick, dense smoke output" advertised on the web page.

Megasteam truly didn't and doesn't work as advertised for me and I don't like the way I was treated for saying so. I was really offended by the whole thing.

The Lionel fluid works fine and it doesn't void my warranty, so I'm staying with that.

I've not yet used the JT's smoke, so can't comment on it. Others obviously use and like the stuff.

I do have a bottle of the MTH Christmas scent smoke fluid, and use it from time to time, although I generally run my trains with the smoke turned off--especially MTH trains which tend to REALLY pour out the smoke and fill the room in a short time. I like the small of the Christmas scent smoke by MTH, but have to use any brand of smoke in relatively sporadic instances since it all seems to bother my dog's sniffer apparatus.

I have been using the JT Smoke and with great results, except I had to clean a K-Line Mikado Smoke unit recently of gum build up.

I told him the problem MAY be the smoke unit...he told me he's running a Lionel starter set loco, which have a history of using cheaply constructed, hit-or-miss smoke units. I also told him that's it's possible w/ a fan-less, low-voltage smoke unit (such as in those locos), Mega-Steam MAY be just a little too dense to properly vaporize.

I didn't think he was trying to "beat me" for the $$$. I did refund him...and I did tell him not to order again...figuring since it did not work for him, he shouldn't order again just to have the chance it wouldn't work again and hence need another refund. Does that not make sense? There was nothing malicious about it. It just didn't work in his particular starter set loco's smoke unit.
