What did you cover your layout with?

Got my train, built my table, now I am considering different options to use to cover the top layer of foam on the table.

I have seen options range from indoor/outdoor carpet to Woodland Scenics foam. I am curious to see what you guys have used and the pros and cons of each.

Also, if you could post a pic of it that would be great.

thanks in advance!!!

Well, I'm no help. Right now mine is covered with saw dust & tools because i'm still in the reconstruction phase. Maybe in a couple years I can say mine is covered with dust and trying to keep it off!

See my post on Layouts for a few photos.

I painted the foam with latex earth tone colors and then used diluted matte medium to bond Woodland Scenics ground foam and Scenic Express ballast to the painted surface. You can also used diluted white glue which is cheaper and just as effective.

Yards and yards of Lifelike grass paper - looks like green sawdust sprinkled on butchers block paper - on 8 or is it 9 4x8 foam boards. A blue felt blanket cut into strips for a canal, fake fur for farmers fallow fields, cotton rolls for snow... See what it looks like at http://condor.depaul.edu/~dmurphy/pictures.htm

Model Power Velour Mat.

Its a roll of paper with the upside a greenish brown velour like material. You roll it over a 4x8, staple it down, and you are done. Cost about $11 a roll. Looks nice, and doesnt make a mess like the sawdust paper.

You can see it in my website pics.

I used cheap indoor out door carpet from home depot. They come in 8x15 rolls. I also found a load of green carpet that mt neighbor was tossing out and used it for the rest. The side walks where painted styrefoam sheets painted from Home depot .And the carpet foam backing ( found also ) was used for background landscape.
hope this helps [swg]

I covered the layout in plaster cloth, then basicly the same as the other guys above. Latex paint and woodland scenics..
I used aquarium stones (small) to mimic the roadbed.
