Discovery Channel "More of our Favorite Toys" segment w/Lionel trains
Posted by wrmcclellan on Monday, December 19, 2005 12:01 PM
Just caught a bit of this episode while taking a break. Has a neat segment featuring Lionel Trains. This must be an older segment as it has clips of trains still being produced in Michigan. Showed painting and track production.

What was extremely interesting were the movie clips of trains running on the classic PW Lionel NY showroom display layout! I never heard of any film of this layout.

This segment also included Mandy Pattikin's layout.

Also shown were Play Dough (production shots, it's inventor and original use as a wallpaper cleaning product!) and Marx toys.

Check it out if you can.

There were some nice film segments from a couple of the earlier showroom layouts in the "final" epidode of Trains Unlimited on the History Channel. It was entitled Toy Trains and featured the Lionel toy train company. You may be able to get a copy from the produdcers, Greystone via the Greystone Amrican History Store.

Roy, I have a video of the 1949 NY layout and of the reproduction of it in a later year.
It was interesting how fast they built it.

LAZ - I did not see a repeat time for it on the Dis Chan's website. It aired yesterday unfortunately.

Discovery and the History channel have aweful web sites. Too much emphasis on looks and not enough on being useful. The search engines are lousy and slow.

Andre,

Great find. Part of that same clip is used in the Dis Chan show, but they obviously fixed the contrast as it was much cleaner than the clip on the web.
