MTH Wheel Question
Posted by Amtrk14 on Sunday, December 18, 2005 9:33 AM
Hello,

I was looking at the MTH's website and I noticed that some of the newer diesel releases either come with scale wheels or Hi-rail wheels. Can someone tell me what the difference is between the two?

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Scale wheels are slimmer to fit scale-sized track (2-rail, for example). Hi-rail wheels are fatter to fit standard O gauge track (tubular, RealTrax, etc).

On steamers, the scale wheels have flanges on all the drivers whereas on the hi-rail flanges are only on the lead and trailing drivers. This permits the hi-rail to navigate a tighter curve with the same engine.
