odd 6357 caboose?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 12, 2005 9:03 AM
I found my old 6357 SP red/maroon caboose with 6357 underscored. It is lighted, has delran trucks w/one coupler, no smokestack, black body w/paint. Blt 9-47, VG to excellent condition. Is this caboose somewhat rare?
Thanks much

6357's made before 1952 didn't have smokestacks. I don't think Delrin existed back then, but trucks can be swapped.

According to Greenberg's guide, the only rare 6357's were the "Circle-L" units with a maroon body and matching painted smokestack, and the A.T.&S.F. units from the "Father and Son" outfit.

Listed in Doyle '04 book as VG$15, EX$22. No mention of Delran. Rare maroon version is $275.-$425. Joe

Your caboose is mentioned in Greenberg's price guide but not 9-47, dates are from 48-61. Without seeing your caboose the best price I could quote you is $25.00, remember
that I have not seen the item and am going by Greenberg's price guides!
Is the letters 6357-50 on it & ATSF? That one can bring up to $890.00.

9-47 was stamped on the original SP type caboose and and was carried over to the later years of the post war period. Its not the date of manufacture.

I have one of these. According to Greenberg's guide, this variation was made from 1960-61, possibly in 1959 depending on when the changeover from bar-end to AAR trucks occurred in lighted cabooses. Most 6357's including this variation are not rare or worth a lot, but you don't see them every day. If eBay listings are any indication, the older versions with bar-end trucks are much more common.

Now all you need is a late 736 steam loco to go with it...[:D]
