Looking for a schematic or repair info
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 9, 2005 2:38 PM
Hi,
Dug out some Lionel trains I had as a kid to put around the Christmas Tree this year. One set of engines is a GP-20. From the MPC Fundimensions era, the model numbers are 6-8360 and 6-8367 (Long Island). I picked up some Fastrack and set it up. I greased the 8360, then tested it out. It ran perfectly. The 8367 has a "electronic horn component", from my investigation was only produced in 1972. I placed it on the track, turned the throttle, and - nothing. The 8360 did not light up. I took the 8367 off, and the 8360 lit up and ran fine. I opened up the 8367, and saw the horn, a circut board, and 3 wires, all disconnected. The wires are attached to the circut board, but nothing else. I do not see any soldier points where the wires should go. The board looks OK, I do not see anything burned to suggest it does not work. I am looking for a schematic of the circut board, and where the wires go, or how to repair. I tried Greenberg's Operating & Repair Manual: Lionel-Fundimensions Trains: 1970-1978, but there are no diagrams, just a line on page 71 that reads "None of the GP dummy units are equipped with lights, but the first two GP-20 dummies (#8355 and #8367) have electronic horn components, including old GP-type contact roller assemblies" Thanks for any help!

Did you try the Lionel website??? They have exploded parts diagrams for many of their products going back to the post war era... Don't know if this loco will be listed, but may be worth a shot....Good Luck...Happy Holidays

Im a bit confused. This is a dummy unit with a horn sounding board? If that is the case,1 wire woud go to the pickup roller,1 wire would go to ground and 2 wires should go to a speaker. You should use superflex wire to the pickup rollers. If you want a horn you could add a Williams True blast or you could add a sound only railsounds kit from Digital Dynamics, they cost $89 plus shipping.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for responding. I tried the Lionel site & the Tech department - the site shows a diagram, but no horn & the parts list does not show it. Tthe tech had no info.

I just went through all my repair books, and ran into the same info. as you did. None. I did find this info in "A Collector's Guide and History to Lionel Trains 1970-1980" by Tom McComas and James Tuohy. The electronic horn was included in the 8355 and 8367 dummies. they sounded good, but didn't work very well. Apparently the contacts got stuck together and burned out the board over time. I know this doesn't help much, but it is an interesting subject. Hope someone can help.

OK, now that I am home in front of the engine, and not at my office, I can be more specific. The circuit board has a number - 51B501028 Rev B. And I apologize, I did not list the correct information. There are 5 wires in the unit. Two wires from the speaker are ok. There is a blue and white striped wire coming from the pickup roller tab that is not attached to anything. There is a yellow wire and a white wire coming off the board. I will try to post pictures of the pieces.

Hello Knights89! Sounds like you may need to send this engine out for repair. Call the Trading Post Train Shop in Cleveland, Ohio at 1-216-661-7300 and see if they can help you out. They may even have a new horn that can be installed in your diesel engine. The reason I mention this is that they keep a supply of hard to get parts on hand..Good Luck.

Hi Knights89

You should do like DaleHz said. If the horn works fine , if not switch the pwr and common wires if it dosen't work order one from lionel.
P.N. 600-8152-050 Horn Circuit $20.00
P.N. 600-8152-536 Speaker $4.60

Hi everyone, and thanks for replying. There are 5 wires. 2 black wires go to the speaker - they are connected. 1 yellow wire and 1 white wire are soldiered to the board in the right corner, sort of near the speaker wire connectors. The last wire is blue and white striped - it is soldiered to the truck, not connected to the board. This is my dilemma. I am trying to get my digital camera to work to show pictures.

OK I have the pictures, but I can not figure out how to post them. There are 5 pictures of about 50K. I can e-mail them to you if you like.

Hi knights,

I know it has been a long time since you posted to this thread, but I am hoping you still have the pictures of the internals of the dummy unit.  I have a 8779 C NW dummy GP-20 unit that I am considering adding a horn to and want to know how it is mounted/housed inside a unit that had one originally.

Thanks!
