It's probably a bad chuff switch. Some engines use a small switch tied in with the smoke unit lever to activate the chuff. Because of their position, these switches have been known to get saturated with smoke fluid and stop working. If you call Lionel, they will probably send you a replacement, no questions asked. They can be replaced in a few minutes if you know how to solder. I've had to do it a couple of times on one of my K-line engines.

Chuffing failure

Howdy folks,
I have a Lionel E6 Atlantic with TMCC from 1999. It chuffed fine when I first got it but has since stopped. It occasionally will let out a chuff then go silent again. I don't have TMCC on my layout. Is this partial soundboard failure or is it a sound I can reprogram using TMCC? The whistle still works.
