next advance in toy trains
Posted by overall on Thursday, December 1, 2005 3:04 PM
I believe that micro fuel cells, now being developed for laptop computers and cell phones will find their way into toy trains. These fuel cells will provide more amp-hours to operate our consumer electronics than the state of the art lithium batteries do today. A typical cell phone that would last one week on a battery will last six months on a micro fuel cell. If a locomotive could carry it’s power source with it, as the real ones do, there would be no need for any third rail or transformer to operate our trains. We could just use our TMCC much as we do now because the signal for it is transmitted through the outside running rails. I believe, for that reason, Lionel will introduce a TMCC equipped, micro fuel cell powered, locomotive to the marketplace. That’s my prediction. You heard it here first.
