Need advice on old Marx Vanderbilt Engine
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 1, 2005 2:43 PM
Hi
I am mostly a Lionel operator/collector. I have my dads old prewar Commordore Vanderbilt engine. I recently cleaned it up, wired a new light and it runs very well. The problem is that the gear in between the wheels sometimes does not mesh with the geared driver wheels. It does this on curves and sometimes straights. I cannot figure it out. The drive rods are rivited to the wheels. Is it because it was run so much and worn down over the past 70+ years? Engine runs like new. Currently it sits on my trainroom shelf as a display. I want to keep it running, pulling all of the old marx cars. Help!
Thanks
Tom

Tom,

There are several very knowledgable people here about Marx trains; maybe Dave will drop in. If you want try the yahoo groups and join MarxTrains. There are a host of folks who seem to have seen about every problem you can have on a Marx unit and still get them to work. I got back into 027 repairing a Lionel unit that had a slightly similar problem. It needed the brush plate replaced. It was opposite from the gear and the bushing had worn out of round and sometime the gears would not mesh correctly. It kept moving but made quite an unpleasant sound!
