Protosounds and cruise control
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 29, 2005 7:37 PM
The question I have deals with engines equipped with Protosound and cruise control. I have a moderate size layout, no digital, no remote, just turn on the power and move the lever (ZW275), can these engines just be put on the track and away you go? or is it more complicated than that.....thx....tom.

Put it on the track and away you go! Everything will work fine except you can't access some of the sounds. Cruise will work fine. Crew talk may be difficult to get. Engine sounds will work fine. Some sounds will work by hitting different sequences with the whistle/horn button. Good-luck!

The biggest problem is you can't get the couplers to fire.

Yes they will, it's a combination of bell and whistle buttons. It's different between PS1 and PS2. Check your manual. [:D]

For PS2 engines:

For Rear coupler:

To fire the rear coupler, quickly tap the Bell button once followed by three quick taps of the Horn button, allowing approximtely 1/2 second to lapse between each quick button prss.

For the Front coupler if it has one:

quickly tap the Bell button once followed by four quick taps of the Horn button, allowing approximtely 1/2 second to lapse between each quick button prss.

This will work in nuetrual or moving. It does take practice to get the timing right on the 1/2 second thing.

Be advised that not all transfomers are fast enough to activate the coupler with the bell/whistle tapping sequence.

You may need to practice your timing to make this work smoothly. A 1/2 second press works well with most, if not all transformers, however, it is easier on some transformers than others. I have two Z750s: Ones a bear to get to work, and the other is trouble free.

PS2 Feature to Be Activated:
Passenger Station Announcements - 1 Bell, 2 Whistles
Fire the Rear Coupler - 1 Bell, 3 Whistles
Speed Control On/Off - 1 Whistle, 2 Bells (from Neutral only)
Lock into a Direction/Unlock - 1 Whistle, 3 Bells
Reset to Factory Defaults - 1 Whistle, 5 Bells (from Neutral only)
