Rewiring an O gauge prewar American Flyer steamer

A friend ask me to restore an old beat up and very rusty prewar AF "O" gauge steamer. The motor and e-unit were in such bad shape we originally decided to just restore the exterior. Well, after a great deal of tender loving care and some parts he was able to come up with, it appears that if rewired, it might even run again. I have my lionel post war repair manual and a wiring diagram for a post war "S" gauge AF engine with the e-unit in the tender but there are some differences. In his engine the e-unit is screwed horizontally to the rear of the motor and protrudes through most of the engine's cab area. On both the e-unit and motor the ground leads of each was originally soldiered to its respective frame. I'm sure with a little experimentation I can come up with the right combinations, but I was hoping someone out there might have a diagram for it or could just furnish me with a quick drawing of the prewar AF e-unit & motor connections.

Thank you,
Ron Jensen

Which engine is it?

I have the old 0-6-0 switcher which has its E-unit hanging out in the cab as you state but there were others the same way.

The best method would have been to make a diagram before you took it apart, easy to say now!

Frankly the principles of wiring should be the same as for a lionel three position e unit, the components may however look different!
