Bob, I just re-read a recent CTT with an article about this very topic. I'll try to find it.

Thanks Doug. I am looking forward to your reply. As a side note , I also tried different transformers with the same result. Bob from Texas

CTT. March 2004, p.68 6-Step Whistle Repair. by Ray L. Plummer. I'm sure you can get a copy of the article from Kalmbach. I think I'd be able to share the steps with you.
1) test; 2) check external electrical connections. 3) remove shell 4) test the relay; 5) clean and tune motor 6) lub motor-shaft bearings. Talks about five more 'serious' problems too.

This loco has an electronic wistle unit, so there is no relay involved.

Bob, we need some more information. Is this a conventional loco or a TMCC loco?

I assume other similarly equipped locos operate properly so there is no problem with the transformer bell and whistle buttons or TMCC controller.

Assuming the problem is with the loco electronics, you can check with Train America Studies to see how they might help.

Call them to discuss.

BTW - Digital Dynamics may be able to help also.

That is correct. This is a conventional loco and not TMCC. It was purchased in 1998 as part of a train set(Santa Fe 8644). There is no relay , however it has a small electronic board connected between the pickup roller and the motor. The connections are all good and the motor turns freely. A listing of parts for this tender , at the Lionel web site , has no parts available for the whistle. Bob in Tx

Bob,

The whistle circuitry is in the tender, not the locomotive. Check the tender rollers and wires in the tender to make sure something has not come loose.

You are correct. I should have said that all whistle components are in the tender. The checks I listed in the last posting were for the tender. Is there a way to check the whistle or motor with leads from the transformer? I have a KW transformer. Also do you know of anyone who sells parts for this tender? I may be beating a dead horse here , for I know this is not an expensive engine/tender. Thanks for any help! Bob in Tx

This tender is still being made, albeit with "PENNSYLVANIA" on the shell, so LIONEL should stock parts, as should any LIONEL Service Station. My first suspiscion would be the whistle controller on your 50 year old KW though.

If it turns out to be the tender, then all you need to do is swap the shell with any of the ka-jillion other whistle tendedrs LIONEL has made over the past ten years.

Thanks for all the help guys. I was able to borrow a 40watt controller from a friend and after cleaning the tender pick wheels I have my whistle back. I would like to fix my KW controller if possible. Does anyone know of a parts layout or how I might fix the whistle controller on my KW? Bob in Texas

Olsen's can help you as can many Lionel Service Stations that carry older parts.

Here is the schematic and parts diagram.

If you are not skilled at working with 110VAC circuitry, you might consider talking it to a local repair shop if there is one in your area.

If the problem turns out to be the copper-oxide rectifier, you can replace it with a modern silicon rectifier.

Sorry about the late response , but life gets in the way sometimes. I went to the web site Roy recommended. I was unable to print the KW layout prints. The message I received was that the douments were not in a JPEG format . Any suggestions on how to print them. Thanks Bob in Texas

On the KW transformer pics, they appear to be in Adobe pdf format and you can download the Adobe reader for free and then call up the page or pages you want and print them from the Adobe reader.
