whistle no longer work...
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 24, 2005 8:49 PM
My whistle no longer works, the train just speeds up.
Someone told me once this was the whistle controler in the
transformer. I have a rw and a type s. What do I need to repair both
of these transformers? Where can I find the parts to do so also?
thanks

The problem may be in your transformer, or in the whistle itself. What locomotive are you running?

The Whistle in PW trains is activated by impressing a DC Voltage on the tracks. The train is operated by AC volts and in older transformers the DC was added by running AC through a copper oxide rectifier disc. Since this reduced the AC to run the train most transformers had a boost coil to increas voltage during DC operation. It sounds lie your Copper oxide discs have shorted. These are available from the parts guys or you can add a sound activation button between your transformer and track.

Try jumper wires from your transformer to the whistling unit, if the unit works this way your track needs to be cleaned. Other problems that I have run into are the tender whistles without the whistle button being used, problem here is dirty track!
Also make sure the whistle unit works before buying any parts as most electrical parts dealers won't take back parts, with electronics parts once you buy it it is yours for life so be sure what you need to do!
