QUOTE: Posted by Bergie Posted: 02 Aug 2005, 11:09:20

Hello all,

Please remember that we don't allow commercial posts in our forums (for sale listings, links to your classified ads, links to your eBay auctions, or products you're selling directly via your business). It's never been a big problem in the past, and we'd like to keep it that way.

Why don't we allow such posts? Because if we start within a few months the quality of the information exchanged here will be diluted with commercial posts. Before you know it, people will join our forum simply to post the train set they found in their uncle's attic that's for sale. No one wants to wade through that to get to the possitive information exchange that occurs here.

Thanks for understanding. And above all, that's for your continued contributions to the forums!

Thanks,
Erik

Is this a commercial post?, or just a guy who has some trains he wants to sell?

Seems like a fine line.

He posted this before opening a new topic: "I have a bunch of Loinel rolling stock and accessories I want to sell". That seems close to "to post the train set they found in their uncle's attic that's for sale". I'm pretty sure I've seen other postings along the lines of Bergie's. But, if there's any policy statement on the web site, I couldn't find it--I had to search the forums before finding that quotation. Perhaps someone from CTT can tell us what the policy is and where it is stated.

This post belongs in the classied section commercial or not..
QUOTE: http://www.trains.com/classifieds/default.asp

Sure, he may be some guy thinning his collection but the stuff is overpriced for the condition he advertises. The prices are higher than what I've seen in retail stores for the same stuff in the same condition. So I consider the post commercial.

I am in total agreement with Bergie. This is supposed to be a private discussion forum. Not a means of free advertising. I would hate to see this forum become a forum that allows commercial dealers to influence the forum to their advantage..

sorry folks I'm as far from commercial as one can get
Father-in law gave me these about 10 years ago as they were sitting in boxes in his basement gathering dust
I cleaned them up and display them every Xmas around the tree. I am now retiring in Mexico and don't care to lug them 2500 miles

The prices are right off the pages of Greenburg and Doyle

I live in Grand Rapids, MI and there aren't too many if any dealers so the reason I tried this forum

Please contact me if interested

as stated above, the prices are high. Condition is subjective and 20% back of Greenberg is even high sometimes.

You may very well be taking those trains to Mexcio.

I agree with Frank. If you want to sell those trains, you need to get more realistic with your prices. The price guides are just that--guides. Most people never realize those prices except perhaps at a train show and then only after lugging them from show to show until they sell.

It's true that most collectors feel the Greenberg prices are inflated. Try putting your stuff on E-bay with a reserve. From what I've seen there if you find the right bunch of bidders you might be driving to Mexico in a new Mercedes

If you want to find a realistic price for your items, go to Ebay and search for completed auctions of each individual item. Find three items that sold that seem to be close to a normal price(i.e. no $75 6465 tank cars from a bidding war) and average them to get a good price. You can add a little bit to it, and you'll still have a fair price.

thanks every one

The numbers i have listed are not what I'm asking, only suggested Greenburg prices
having spoken to a number of dealers and collectors and realize Green burg is Retail and all I can expect is about half if that

Checked E Bay last week there were 5500 lionel posts so I'll avoid them, too much work

Does any one know any dealers in West Mi

I'm in contact with an interested dealer in Southern OH but the shipping is a killer

Ebay is a lot more manageable if you search for the numbers of the items you had. A search for "Lionel 6465", for example(one of the items you have) returned only 30 items.

One of the categories I frequent on Ebay, both for buying and selling, currently over 30,000 items listed in it. I never have a bit of trouble finding what I want.

thanks all for the advice everyone

Had a dealer/collector come by today. Bought some things and gave me pricing advice on the rest. Showed me all the little details missing on the various items I never knew about
Tried E Bay with specific numbers which really narrowed down the search. If I was a buyer there are real bargains for mint items
