Is there something I'm missing? - regarding prewar Flyer

I've got two pre-war O-gauge Am. Flyer engines, 1218 and 3113. I think it's the same motor in both, one has a reversing unit. Anyway, I give them the slightest amount of power and they take off to the races. I have to cut the power to keep them from flying off the curves. Using the same transformer other pre and post-war engines run fine. Is there something missing in the motors of these two engines? Do I need some other transformer for these two racers? I'm using a pre-war flyer transformer, model BB. (Sounds more like the name for a beagle than a transformer!)
