Also, if its the old Lionel type, be sure the lower bearing is oiled too. It will make them drag adn etc if it is getting weak voltage.

By "fades out", do you mean that it becomes harder to operate at all away from the lockon, or that it operates everywhere but makes less noise away from the lockon? If the latter, it does not seem that it could be the rectifier, since the relay is apparently remaining closed.

Add more lockons or solder jumpers around the track. Like mentioned, poor connections through pins. Rectifier might be weak but still connection porblems.

The connections in the tubular track might be bad, and will have to be replaced.
just my 2 cents

If you are using a postwar transformer, the rectifier may be weak, and it might need to be replaced.

Air whistle acting up--but it's not broken

Well my steam engine's doing something funny. And, yes, it's the air whistle. When I run the engine on FasTrack, the whistle works perfectly. Then when I run it on my slightly larger tubular track loop, the whistle works right when you pass the lock on but then "fades out" to nothing all around the rest of the track. What's the problem?
Long live the BNSF .... AND its paint scheme. SchemerBob
