there is a process of using glycerin to make lichen more durable for use on a layout.

you might consider the same for the peat moss.

ask around for the procedure; as i don't do it myself.

Jim, Be sure to wear a dust mask when you use it, that's what caused my bronchitis to flair up real bad.

Thanks, guys. I did some research last night and discovered it's harmless to humans. I'll be using it on my layout. It has a great color and texture. I'll also be sure to secure it well with a water/glue spray mix.

Peat moss is OK if you keep it contained. If it dries out and blows around the layout, then becomes wet again it could become corrosive to metal if it stuck to any metal parts. Peat is organic and has an acid base.It is harmless to people but not so good to metals.

Could be a fire hazard. I'd check outside to see how flamable it might be. If it's the same type of moss used in gardens, I've seen it burn and smolder, lit by a discarded cigarette.

If I'm not mistaken, Neil Young used it and other natural materials on his layout which was featured in CTT many years ago. I don't know what it was, but I came away with a spooky feel from looking at the pictures. It was almost dungeon or cave like. I don't think it was the moss itself, but just a general impression that the layout left with me.

I suppose you can use it, just remember that eventually it will dry out.

I have a huge bag of (sphagnum or sphagnumized) peat moss and the color and texture would be just right for use on a layout. Are there any health hazzards associated with this stuff or is it safe to use? There are no precautionary warnings on the bag, but I thought some mosses contained harmful spores/
