Doug:

A couple of things I did. First I used women's eye shadow to get specific dirty spots - the gutters, beneath the windows, the door frames, etc. They eye shadows have a sponge type applicator that lets you brush it on pretty nicely. Then I misted the building on all four sides with Floquil Grimy Black. A couple of passes from about two feet away. I like the Floquil because it seems to be better paint. I was trying to use Flat Black for teh same technique, but teh consistency of the paint is cheap and it sputters, leaving big black splotches.

Lastly, Floquil also makes a shade called "instant weather". I apply this last. It is kind of sandy in color, again I misted all four sides from about two feet.

Occasionally, I will also use Floquil "roof Brown" for a lighter weathering look..

After you take all the time and effort to paint and detail these buildings, it's a leap of faith to just run a spray can by it like that, but if you keep your distance - about two feet - and check your work after every pass you get good results.

Beautiful job, Frank - looks great in the sunlight. What did you use for the weathering ?
