RAK, Send me an email. Got pictures I'll send back. Will try to find the MTH parts list. If not, the nice lady at MTH can get them for you. Radio Shack has the rest.

Chief,

I have two MTH Dash 9's that I would like to upgrade with smoke units. Could I trouble you to list the parts that you selected and describe how you made your modifications?

Thank you in advance!

^^^ yeah, i want to double up on the gp60's as well, except atlas's dummy units are super dummy. No smoke unit, not even lighting! I think for over $200 they could at least be lighted!

Maybe ill just have to do with 2 live units! :)

I have an SD-35 by Atlas and the sounds are fabulous, it is one of the early issues so it doesn't have the smoke unit but the level of detail more than makes up for that. If I could afford it I would love to have a GP-60, powered & dummy, in Vermont Railway livery. [^]

i OWN BOTH LIONEL AND ATLAS ENGINES. THE ONLY THING MISSING FROM THE ATLAS ENGINES IS THE TOWER COMM AND CREW CHATTER. THEY ARE BOTH GOOD ENGINES. THE ATLAS SOUNDS ARE GREAT. THE ATLAS ENGINES ARE MORE DETAILED THAN LIONEL'S.

92,

The vintage of Lionel RS in the loco will determine if you can chg the sound chip or not.

The best resource for this is Train America Studios www.tastudios.com.

Give them a call and tell them what you have and they can tell you what your options are. Their prices are reasonable for what you are dealing with.

Good luck!
Roy

Railsounds Upgradeable????

As well as considering the sd-80mac, i am also currently considering the AtlasO GP60 for its find lever of detail and beautiful SF paint scheme.

Now i hear that the Railsounds in the Atlas unit it not prototypicaly correct, which doesnt exactly bother me as long as the unit doesnt sound bad.

Ive heard that lionel will only release a certain set of railsounds for other manufacturers like Atlas and K line.

So, my question is is it possible to upgrade a railsounds system with diffrent sounds???? Can u like upoad them into the loco, or do u have to replace the whole unit, and how much $$$ are we talking. Just wondering if their are options......

Like i said, im not really all that concerned with prototypical acuracy as for the sound, but does the Atlas unit sound good still???
