Is the E6 Atlantic the "Lindberg engine"; also known as "the train that beat the plane" ? If so, I want to get one. Can anyone who has one please let me know the good points and the less-than-good points about this engine?

The original issue of this loco by Lionel (6-28005) has number 461 on the cab. So it is close but not the real Lindburgh deal. I do not recall the numbers on the later releases.

I have one and it is a great little engine, but like Lionel locos at that time, has one chuff per revolution of the drivers. I believe it can be had for a pretty low price compared to its original list price. If you can only find the traditional version, Lionel still sells the upgrade kit to TMCC and RSs.

Actually the original issue (sometime around 2000) was numbered 460. At least the TMCC version was. I have one and here is my opinion:

GOOD:
Seems to have good proportions that capture the squatty nature of the Atlantic unlike MTH's version which is too long.
Good quality railsounds, whistle and chuff even though it's a small tender
Relatively good details.

BAD:
No speed control, so while it is a smooth runner, it takes off pretty quickly.
Single chuff per revolution
Smoke unit is the traditional puffer type timed with the chuff at 1 per rev.
moulded in coal load
no figures in cab.
shiney siderods and grab rails

I haven't seen the newer release so I can't speak of the improvements made.

Is it any closer in proportions  /  appearance to the orginal?

From the reviews I've read, the new release uses the same castings so the size and shape are identical.

The main differences are:
real coal in tender
2 chuffs per rev.
Figures in cab
Fan driven smoke unit
Railsounds 5 (I think)
Speed control
