LAY OUT Q & A
Posted by ED WHITFORD on Saturday, September 10, 2005 6:42 AM
HELLO TO ALL , I AM NEW TO THE SIGHT.

I GOT A QUESTION FOR YOU ALL?[?]
LOOKING TO BIULD A LAYOUT FOR MY SON & I TO PLAY WITH.
THE TABLE I HAVE SET UP IS APPROXIMENTLY 16' X 14' L SHAPE, WITH 7' SQARES ON THE ENDS.

LIKE MY FATHER (KIETH WHITFORD / LANSING MI ) WE HAVE JUST ABOUT EVERY SCALE YOU COULD THINK OF FROM Z - 1 1/2" THAT YOU RIDE ON.[:)]

HOWEVER WITH THE AGE OF MY SON FOR OUR BASEMENT LAYOUT I AM ONLY WANTING TO RUN STANDARD GAUGE , LIONEL & AMERICAN FLYER. I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE TO HAVE THE ABILLITY TO RUN 2 TRAINS OF EACH.[:p]

FOR THE STANDARD GAUGE ALL I HAVE IS THE OLD 2-4-2'S & 0-4-0 ELECTRICS. SO I AM THINKING OF JUST USEING THE STANDARD RADIUS OF CURVE FOR THAT SET UP SOME OF THE TRACK I AM PLANING ON USEING IS A 90% CROSSING & THE FEW SWITCHES I HAVE. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE CAPIBILLITY OF HAVEING A PASSING TRACK ON IT AS WELL.

LIONEL WOULD HAVE TO BE A MUCH LARGER SET UP, I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE ABILLITY OF DOING THE SAME THING ON THIS AS I WOULD THE STANDARD GAUGE. ONLY THE CURVES WOULD HAVE TO BE MUCH LARGER. WOULD LIKE TO BE ABLE TO RUN MY MTH SCALE BIG BOY ALONG WITH MY OLDER LIONEL TIN PLATE.

FINALLY,[:I] I WOULD LIKE THE AMERICAN FLYER TO BE ABLE TO DO THE SAME AS THE OTHERS THE ONLY BIG ENGIANS I HAVE ARE THE CHALLENGERS.

I AM THINKING THE ONLY WAY I CAN ACHIVE THIS IS TO RUN EVERY THING ON A TIER SET UP. AS OF NOW I AM THINKING IT WOULD GO IN THIS ORDER FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. STANDARD, AMERICAN FLYER & THEN LIONEL.[:D]

MY MAIN GOAL IS TO JUST BE ABLE TO RUN THE TRAINS & TO MAKE THEMM LOOK AS IF THEY ARE DISSAPPERING THEN REAPPERING SOME WHERE ELSE , WICH I THINK USEING THE TIER METHOD I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO, OK[:I]
I I GET A COUPLE OF SIDEINGS OUT OF THE DEAL ALL THE BETTER.

WHILE I MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO INHAIERIT MY DADS ABILLITY TO REPAIR/ RESTORE THEM LAYOUT BIULDING IS NOT MY STRONG SUIT.[xx(]

SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST BUT I WANTED TO GIVE YOU AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE FOR THE HELP.[:D]

THANK YOU & TAKE CARE. SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING.

[#welcome] to the CTT forum

It seems that everytime we have this type of question we refer them to this web page. I know I will be using the ideas for a Christmas Layout this year.

Davis Trains near Cincinnati has a tiered layout in their store. The layout has N, S, O and G scales. Check out their store and the photo of the layout at:

Ed, welcome and "sit down and stay with us for a while." Now if you are from MI, you know you can not trust a Buckeye. [;)] No, Buckeye is a great one with knowledge of layout building and I look forward to visiting Davis Trains one day in the future [will request Cincinnati as one of my "tour" cities this year]. Some great articles in the past in CTT with O and S combined layouts. If you don't have one, I recommend a subscription to CTT. Good luck and keep posting.
