Old Lionel Model Train

You're Lionel set is very collectable and quite valuable! There is a very high demand for it in Canada. I've seen the boxcars for the provinces without boxes go for over US$20 each on ebay. A whole set in mint condition with the boxes is probably going to bring in at least US$300, possibly more.

As for the Tyco stuff (and two cars made by Cox), a lot of it is very common, but some of it is harder to find and in demand from collectors. The better items in your lot are the Southern steam engine and the cars with brand names for various products (Coke, Pepsi, etc.). Sorry, didnt mean to offend anyone.lol ;-) T hey have been sitting in an attic for 30 some years, not opended. To me who is 30 something, that makes them old. In my guess, these were made specifically for the Canadian market , each boxcar represents a province of Canada and has the provincial flag and the date that they entered into confederation.

I have some Lionel HO from the 70's and none of it was printed in French... it looks like that would have been for the Canadian market.

There are a few people in my generation, who grew up seeing Tyco trains in the Christmas catalog, who are collecting Tyco now. When I expressed disbelief, the guy told me, "Well, that's the reaction Marx got 20 years ago."

But note what I said: People are *collecting* Tyco. "Collecting" doesn't necessarily mean "paying lots of money for."

The guys are right, there isn't a lot of collecting going on in the HO arena. Sometimes a Lionel fan will buy a Lionel HO set because it's Lionel, and the same for Marx.

My best advice: List it on Ebay with a starting price of 99 cents, put a ton of pictures in the listing, end it in the evening hours, and hope for the best. Or keep it and set it up at Christmas.

It almost looks like a special set that someone asked Lionel to make ; not being from Canada, I'm not sure what a Confederation set is.

Why is the Lionel box shown printed in both English and French? I know zilch about Lionel HO. Was this a common practice or was this set originally shipped to Canada?

keithsindiapaleale, the problem is that there is no real collectors market for HO trains like there is for O and S gauge. Some of the O gauge Lionel collectors might be interested in the Lionel HO set just because it is Lionel. The Tyco trains were common and entry level quality, still they look to be in good shape so you might get a few dollars on ebay.

The Lionel HO set has some collectable value. John is right about the Tyco stuff. Not highly sought after, but might get a few bucks on Ebay.

As to prices, the Lionel HO stuff from the 70s won't bring a lot and Tyco even less. Still, that Lionel set looks to be in good shape. It's a matter of finding the right buyer who might be looking for that particular set.

Hey all,

I know nothing about collecting, but a good friend of mine has an old train set that has practically never been opened, that he is thinking of selling. I am wondering if someone may be able to point me in the right direction as to who I might want to talk to. Possibly e-bay, any price ideas?
I am pretty sure that none of the cars or engine have ever been out of the boxes. Not sure of age, possibley 70's.
Actually have 2 sets, one has been played with.
