Posting Relies - could it be 1/3 LESS painful ?

UGHHH!!!!! I only have a dial-up connection at home. It just took me 21 minutes to open the Sunday Picture thread and post my 2 pictures to it, and there were only 4 posters at that time.

The initial opening of the thread is slow trying to bring in all the picture images. I accept that given that I'm using cheap, and slow, dialup.

After I add my 2 cents worth and click 'post reply' it is slow again because is has to reload the entire page again and include the new stuff.

What I don't like, and wish would change, is what happens after you intially load the page and then click on "post reply" - instead of just opening a reply window, it opens a window and has to bring all those picture images into the window a second time.

So I have to wait for pictures to load 3 times to view and post.

Just curious, can the reply process be changed easily to eliminate bringing the entire thread into the reply window? Then I'd only have to be patient twice. [:)]

This really ain't a beef with the software since I realize it's my choice to stick with dial-up. Just a suggestion.

thanks - walt

Just replied without clicking on Reply to topic. Did quick reply in block below. Then you don't get all those little faces.

Walt,

Are you scrolling to the bottom of the page the posts are on and replying in the " Quick Reply " dialog box? or are you clicking on the "Reply to topic" icon at the top right of the posts. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the whole page does not reload if you use the " Quick Reply " dialog box. Give that a try. Out here in Cali, SBC offers DSL at $14.95 / mo. I think that's as cheap as dial-up. I'm not sure what the speed is at that price but you might check with your local phone provider to see if they have a similar deal.

I'm on a dial-up here at home, as well, but have no problem with the Quick Reply feature (which is what I'm using to write this post). Just scroll to the bottom of the page; type in my post; and hit the "Submit Reply" button.

Perhaps that doesn't work if you're doing photos, or whatever, but it sure seems to work well enough for text only. Better/faster than some of the other forums I visit.

Ditto for editing a post, which is just I what did.

I'm using dial-up and when I post photos I use the Quick Reply and enter the codes as per Spankybird's instructions. It does cycle back to the topic as usual but not an extremely long process. Opening posts with photos does take a long time, I usually leave Sun. Photo Fun until a time I'm home alone and unlikely to receive any phone calls.

Our phone Co. has DSL but it would be ontop of the AOL charge (AOL provides all the safeties) and with the small amount of photos I post, e-mail, receive, etc. I'll live with the time delay.

I know what you mean. I've got dialup and it can be mind numbing. It took me an average of 16 minutes to log into my Earthlink account and open and e-mail and print it out.

I ended up replacing my 8 year old Mac (233mhz processor) with a new eMac (1.42 Ghz processor) and it is actually faster than my iMac at work (833 mhz processor) with a T1 line.

The websitewill be redesigned in the next year and I'll pass your comment on to the Web Powers That Be.

Like Roger, I simply hold off on opening any photo files, such as the Sunday Photo thing. I'll generally check those quickly at the office in the mornings, where I have high-speed access (I'm too cheap to pay for that kind of service at home, at least at the present time). I don't even have cable TV service anymore, since I rarely watch much television. I would rather spend that money on my hobby and other more useful things.

Since we use the computer a lot I have decided for cable 1024kb/sec and an unlimited amount of download. The sunday photo fun page loads in less then 2 seconds. The computer I use is a 3mHz athlon 64 processor and is a "bit" overdone for the moment, but playing games is much easier with it.
In Holland a dail up connection costs a fortune, since every minute you use the computer the phone company charges you money. If 3 persons use the internet for just 1 hour a day the phone bill will already be 3 times as high as the high speed cable..
The choise is obvious..

WHEW! I was afraid that I'd be called all kind of "loosen those wallet strings" names! I do use quick reply but I didn't think quick reply worked for posting links to other sites. But now that you guys point it out, I'm in quick reply and I just clicked on the "Show Forum Code" link to the left.

Let me see if I can post an image:

I just did a 'Preview Reply' and the photo was there. I could not, however, click on it to enlarge it as I can do the old way that I was doing it. Maybe after I submit the reply I can come back in and see if the click to enlarge works.

thanks, this sure beats watching photos load twice - IF the click to enlarge works that is. Mine show up small for some reason.

as always, thanks - walt

UPDATE: After I posted and checked the thread again, the 'click to enlarge' did work [:)][:)][:)][:)]
