I read an article by Len Carparelli regarding his encounters with lou shur at madison hardware. Does anybody have any other info on what happened to Mr Shur and the rest of thr staff after he closed shop. I was also interested where he kept the 18 tractor trailers worth of inventory and parts that magically appeared in that little store on 23st. in New York.

Welcome to the forum, Henry! I understand most of Madison Hardware's inventory was bought by Richard Kughn - who used to own Lionel. I saw a photo in a fairly recent CTT of the old Madison Hardware location.

Hello Henryp ! After he sold Madison Hardware Mr.Shur retired and moved to Florida. He Died about 5 or 6 years ago.Carl Shaw is also deceased. After Madison was sold,The Inventory of Trains & Parts were moved to a Huge Warehouse on W.Fort St in Detroit where they were inventoried and sold over the next 12 years up until the time of the auction in 2003. Hope this helps

Here is a story of mine about Madison Hardware. In late 1985 I had ordered Parts from Madison for a 1689E O27 Streamliner. While on the Phone with Carl Shaw ( Lou's Brother) I asked Carl if they still had any mint 1688's still in the Box. Well, He misunderstood what I had asked him and said: "I'll tell you the value of a 1688 if you can tell me what my Stanley Steamer Automobile is worth" I was taken back by this and told him that I was only interested in buying a mint 1688 if they were still in stock. He replied. " Oh, sorry about that. I thought you wanted to know what a 1688 is worth" and he replied that they might have some. But that he would have to look around and see if there were any more 1688's in the store and that it might be about 5-10 minutes to look around. Not wanting to run up a phone Bill I replied no thanks,Maybe later. Sometimes I wished I had waited. Oh Well, such is life. I did find it interesting that Carl owned a Stanley Steamer Auto and often wonder if Richard Kughn bought it from Carl at one time or another. Maybe someday we'll find out.
