You can often find small stones of various colors and sizes along any road. These can be used to create the classic New England stone fences. Dirt and sand can be used but you might want to bake this in a disposable pan in your oven (250 degrees will work) for about half an hour to kill bacteria, etc. Twigs and small weeds can be used for trees - you can preserve green weeds with glycerine, available at most drug stores or seal with flat spray paints in browns and greens.

I'm modeling New England and plan to include a stone wall around a dairy farm.

At home centers you can purchase dense, smooth styrofoam in sheets that are roughly 3/4" thick. Cut off a strip and scribe stones into the sides and top using a small paperclip or an awl. Paint it with water-based paint and washes and you will have a very convincing stone wall. Cheap and easy.

unsure what a scrub beach is.

why not play around with some sand, dirt, clay, small rocks, twigs and branches; also, dry out some weeds. Bet you could create all that and more.

Happy to answer more specific questions after you give it a try. Worst thing could happen is you'd have to remove it.

An O gauge layout.
I want to create several linear feet of nearly vertical wall and abutment using timber, steel pilings, or stone appearance.
I also need several square feet of gently rolling scrub beach and pasture.
How about a New England stone wall too?
I would rather not use commercially finished products.
I'm sure that some of you have created effects that meet my needs using non-commercial materials.
